Pentecost Sunday  C

I go to a small fruit shop in the village because there is always welcome and a bite of fun. The staff look and see you. Last week I was struggling to open a plastic bag. A young man noticed me. He opened a bag in a flash and presented it to me. He said that he was from Poland. At the checkout I noticed cooking apples. I felt a longing for stewed apples of my youth. I asked the checkout lady how to make stewed apples. She said ...no problem ...have you a microwave  ...three minutes. It reminded me too of how much wonderful women ‘take on board’ in making our world.

I was privileged to help young people to celebrate Confirmation over the years. I always admired the art work they presented, with the help of the teacher, on the seven gifts of The Holy Spirit. Now, I think that I would say to them that there are a billion gifts and more of The Holy Spirit in our lives. The Spirit of Confirmation helps us to notice them. That was a promise that Jesus gave. His going away would be a more pervasive presence in different ways colouring our lives and our world. I think that I would ask the young people to ‘spot’ the gifts of Spirit surrounding their lives every second, at home, at school, at work, at sport, at the shopping centre, in friendship ,creativity, wonder, nature.

We live in a world drenched with The Risen Presence of Christ. I look so often, but I don’t see. Come Holy Spirit, make me gratefully aware of a world constantly renewed by Your shy and gentle Presence.
