Pentecost Sunday B

A night cap in the Pub is a blessing. The smiling floor attendant is lighting candles on a birthday cake. The air is filled with song. In another corner, there is a different group.

Brendan tells me... Remember you christened my lads child a few weeks ago. My other sons wife was also 'expecting', but the baby didn't 'make it'. We are shattered. Her name is Ashling. As friends arrived, they hugged Brendan and his wife, and affirmed them with warm hand shakes. The grandparent said 'We have an angel plugging for us in Heaven.

I said that I would light a candle. What struck me, is how joy and sorrow can be fellow travellers in the journey of life. Some ask ..'Where is God. I don't know why there had to be a 'Good Friday', but I do believe that hidden in it, was Easter Sunday. God is faithful. Life wins through. God's Spirit is alive in the support that people give each other, through the joy, and through the sadness of life.

At the same time, I got a text message from a friend who is a Mercy Sister in Kenya Africa. She works with deprived and impoverished children in the slumbs of Naoribi. She said that, The Sisters are receiving awards here today for their work in health and education. It was a bad year for the farmers, Michael said, but don't forget that The Sun never fails to shine.
