Holy Family C

One of Sister Wendy’s favourite art paintings is today’s story of Jesus, lost and found. Mary is sitting, sad and annoyed, looking intently at Jesus, with one hand seeking explanation. Joseph is looking firmly at Jesus, with a stern hand, saying “Look at all the trouble you have caused your mother.”The youngster, Jesus, stands stubbornly, in self confidence, with arms folded, staring at Mary and thinking.. what’s all the fuss about.

Sister Wendy calls the Painting...UNDERSTANDING. She adds a prayer...Please help me to understand other people and not to be upset when they don’t understand me. Truth is that love and anger go together, especially in family life. Mary is annoyed, so is Jesus. Joseph is trying to keep the peace.

I remember as a youngster being asked.. Where were you...answer, nowhere, what were you doing ...nothing. Sister Wendy says that no matter how strong we may feel about anything, we must always say, I may be wrong. That surely is blessed advice, through marriage, relationships, jobs, world delegations, religion or no religion. I admire people who help young people with sporting games. They learn to give and take, to honour a promise, to put one’s self out for another. Young students sang, danced, played music and sat with residents in The Nursing Home. There was joy.

In today’s story, both are right and both are wrong. Life is not about either, or. It is about both and Jesus Mary and Joseph help us.
