1 Sunday Advent C

When Mary hears that her cousin, Elizabeth, is expecting a baby, Mary’s first thought is .. O, how can I help Elizabeth... getting ready, preparing clothes, washing up, cooking, ironing, shopping, arranging flowers and chatting. And it says that Mary tried to get to Elizabeth, as quick as possible. When they hugged, the voice of Mary was God blessing the baby to be born.

Our ordinary words can carry God’s blessing too. God hides in the ordinary. We can get distracted looking for God in the extraordinary, in dramatic signs and visions. Christmas means, God in touch with us and we in touch with each other, in ordinary ways of everyday living. Mary was simply there, no fuss, no preaching, or religious discussion...a helping hand.

Jesus, twice today, refers to Himself as Son of Man. That means The Human One. Where there is humanity, there is God. Christmas tells how God wed Himself to our humanity. Now His Spirit is in us, in others and in the world. Sometimes, people say to me that they are not very religious, but they talk to God in their heart, with their own prayers. The young band star, who died recently, said that he talked to God every day. When I see young men and not so young wheeling the baby in the Park, plus the dog, I ask myself could they be doing anything better.

We can’t escape the ordinary. There are many ‘extras ‘to the ordinary on the Christmas menu. So Jesus says, be aware, stay awake. Talk to My Spirit in your heart and be grateful.
