6 Sunday  B

The Cross of the Scriptures in Clonmacnoise was built a thousand years ago, by Celtic monks, to celebrate an Irish King ...Flann. Hidden under the arm of the Cross is my favourite panel, which is A Hand. It is called The Right Hand of God. Jesus Christ is The Right Hand of God, and watching the way Jesus uses his hands, shows us the face of God. God comes in touch with us, through Jesus Christ, so that we may be in touch with each other.

We see Jesus Christ touching a man, who was untouchable, because of his disease. He would also be isolated by community and family, condemned to a life of loneliness ...in a wilderness.

The Baptism of a child is a wonderful celebration of the blessing of touch. I like to recall how the mothers brought their children to Jesus that He might touch them, even more He put his arms around them and hugged them. That is the Christian image of God. The baby is carried by hand to the Font, is touched in blessing by all the people, and holding by hand a lighted candle the parent promises to tell the Story of Jesus Christ to their child.

At Mass we hand up bread and wine as a sign of thanks for life, and we ask God to bless our work of human hands .Our hands talk for our heart. We ask for generosity of heart to reach out to others, to care, especially for the less fortunate, and have the courage to show our friendship to every human being.
