6th Sunday Easter C

Hubert Richards was a Scripture scholar. In the early days of Vatican Two, I was privileged to attend some of his lectures, in Leicester Square, in London. He renewed my faith, with his joyful scholarship. He said that we tend to think of Easter as an event in the past. It is more a reality of the present.... everyday life. I AM THE RESURRECTION, Jesus said, not I was.

The Easter stories try to tell us that The Risen Christ is present to us now in new, different ways, through His Spirit. The going away of Jesus was the sending of His Spirit. The children’s Mass prayer says “Father in Heaven, You have called us to receive the Body and Blood of Christ at this table, to be filled with the joy of His Spirit. Through This Sacred Meal, give us strength to please You and care for one another.”

We are steeped in a Three Person Friendship. Our story begins with Love and ends in Love. Meantime we try to be loving in our lives, because life is about how we relate to God, to one another, to the world that we have on loan. Amongst the happiest that I meet in life are people in Nursing Homes and in Care Centres, with warm shake hands, a smile, a Thank you word. The Risen Easter Spirit is touching their hearts and the fragrance is evident.
