‘You are my friends’. I like those words of Jesus. I tell them at Wedding Celebrations. May the newly weds not only be good partners through life, but also be good friends. A good friend is loyal, but does not expect perfection. The friend takes us ‘where we are at, wants our well being. There is freshness in a friend and the friend in need is the friend indeed.
God chose us to be friends so that we can be friends with others. We are made for communion with God and with each other. ’Lord, You made us to live for You and for each other ‘.
The Food of Holy Communion is God’s Bread of Friendship that feeds our spirit in the challenging journey of life and is not reward for virtue, but a caring and healing medicine, a strength and encouragement for the weak and weary. Come to Me all you who are burdened....Take and eat.
At First Communion time, and Confirmation time, it is a blessing when young people are encouraged to share their gifts, in some ways with others. The Love of God in Holy Communion whispers that we can’t eat uncaring if others are hungry. It may be hunger for food. It may be hunger for friendship. Communion warms the heart to ‘put oneself out’ for another.
