5 Sunday  B

Brian Keenan, an Irishman was kidnapped and held as a hostage in a dark dungeon. When he was freed he spoke on T.V. He asked people to look at his hands. This hand he said can kill, torture, blow up homes, destroy places and property and this other hand can welcome, work, comfort, console, hug and make a better world. One is a clenched fist of hurt, the other an open hand of respect.

The Hands of Jesus Christ catch the eye. They are God in touch with us, so that we can be in touch with each other and our planet.

Jesus today takes a sick woman by the hand and helps her to get well. The little child in school finished the story by saying...and then the woman made tea for them all.

Our hands praise God in work and worship. The bread and wine at Mass say that. I have always liked the idea of children using their hands in prayer and praise at Mass. We bless with our hands at Mass because we have Three Special Friends ....Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We touch our forehead, lips and heart at Mass in welcome of God’s Holy Word. We raise our hands to say Thanks. We shake hands at Mass to express peace and friendship. We cup hands to receive Holy Communion. We light a candle for our intention. We pray alone, like Jesus too, in search of inspiration and strength to meet the challenges of life.
