There is a world famous painting in the Art Gallery in Dublin, called ‘The handing over of Christ’ by Carravagio .It shows Jesus being arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. All kinds of hands are raised up in anger and aggression, taunting the victim. Jesus remains placid. Saints and spiritual people wonder why Christ lets Himself be handed over.

He has been active in healing, teaching The Father’s love. Now He goes inactive, passive, waiting on what others do. He takes on pain, suffering and death. In this way He tells that He is glorified, like a seed passing through the process of waiting and death, to become glorified in the bread we celebrate eating.

Why it has to be this way we don’t know. Being handed over is a passion of waiting in life. I visit Nursing Homes. I see people waiting to be washed, to be lifted, to be fed, to be driven, to be listened to. It seems like the passion of Christ in action. Waiting, being handed over was Christ way to Glory and Joy. His Spirit lives with us. We don’t travel alone. Lord, into your hands we commend our spirit.
