What is a great person the
Teacher asked. A great person makes others feel great, was the answer
given. I think that was the style of Jesus. People felt good in his
presence. I imagine that He listened to people very well. Some say
that we are given two ears, but one tongue, so we can listen two times
more often than we talk. Jesus was thirty years listening in Nazareth,
before He began his preaching-talking, for three years. Even then,
notice how He often gets away from the crowds, to avoid crushing ...
The pace of life today, I
often think, is crushing ....school runs, after school commitments,
traffic jams, and business pressures. Deep down people know that the
most precious gift we can give to family and people is time. It is not
easy to make time, to exchange our stories. Some people tell me that
they make ’Sunday ‘a must time for the family to eat one meal
together a week, and share stories. Again, not easy, with leisure
games, and sale shopping to compete with.
Recently a family man said to
me that the new going out is staying in. He was encouraging the
‘Take away’ to share at home together. Also the Pub of to day is a
kind of chapel of companionship, with a
listening ear for each other, and
a shared drink. The word companion means ‘to share bread with
someone’. A wise Parish Priest advised me, starting a new parish, to
talk and eat with people first, before you do business. Jesus shared
meals and companionship with all kinds of people .Our Mass celebrates
that kind of companionship, a time to listen to Gods story, a time to
share His Meal and also a help to make time for oneself and others..
