I am sure that one thing that we all have in common is asking....Why did God let that happen, and why should that happen to me? We are in good company. Jonah is God’s friend. God asks him to go and tell his neighbours that God cares for them. Jonah says No, because they are a rotten lot of sinners.

God says a second time ...Jonah go to my people. Jonah goes on a holiday instead. Then he is thrown into the sea, and a whale picks him up, and lands him where he didn’t want to go. Right Jonah says to God ..’I still won’t tell them that you care for them...I’ll tell them that you are angry, hoping that they would reject God and be punished.

Instead all the people held a big party celebration in praise of God.. the very opposite of Jonahs plan. Gods Song today tells us the meaning of the funny story ...Lord, make me know your paths...teach me your way ...God is shocking in Compassion and Love. His thoughts are not our thoughts.

To trust in a Caring God may not make life easier, but does make life more worthwhile. When bad things happens to good people God is always present to help us get through, but not in ways we can always understand, because living is not just about life here. It is about eternal life.

Thinking about the horror of innocent women and children suffering through war, the poet asked ‘Are they martyrs who fall, that angels might fly?’
