3 Sunday Advent C

I really like going to the Shopping Centre. I feel like a child in wonderland. When I came to this area over thirty years ago, there were no roads, no electricity, no shops, no buses, just fields and some young people. Now it is like a wonderland.

I imagine God, seeing the whole world, as a wonderland, and we are the special guests. I imagine God’s Spirit being my guide at the Shopping Centre. She or He says ..look at the children in their colour, variety and innocence, aren’t they wonderful. Look at the mothers and fathers, not thinking of themselves, but planning for children and joining in simple eating treats, how they sit at the flowing fountain and celebrate the magic of water, with a loose coin, and an ice cream cone..see the young people searching for style and bargains. Notice the carers at the escalators and others, keeping a watchful eye on us. Surely, all is a taste of super abundance and of God.

Jesus is always trying to teach, this “wonder of God” for us. All is given. God’s love is forever and can never change, no matter what we do. This is the message...The Good News. It cannot be bought. It is priceless and free.

John the Baptist, like ourselves, finds this message difficult to believe. He puts stress on doing things, as if we can “earn” God’s love, but it is not like that. It is more wonderful. Jesus says I baptise you with my Spirit. His Spirit is fire. The Spirit of Love is the only Fire God knows, never destructive, always creative. With this faith, our human hearts cannot but warm, then we warm the hearts of others and the world, that we share.

So God tells us today...Shout for joy, Have no fear, dance. God is my song. God is my Saviour. God is in our midst. We respond in doing loving actions, not because God is threat, but because God is The Tremendous Lover and that is Christmas.
