32 Sunday  B

I imagine that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was a widow early in life. Joseph is not mentioned at the Cana Wedding, or in the adult life of Jesus. Mary is alone at Calvary’s cross. There is no doubt that Jesus had a sensitive and compassionate care for widows.

In today’s story He admires a widow’s generosity of heart. I am sure, that He also had a feel for the loneliness, fear and hurt that can go with widowhood. The heart aches for companionship. We all forget. We are preoccupied with our own concerns. Maybe, Jesus is telling us that a way of peace is to try to think of the other person, even to put oneself out for someone, when one’s own heart is in grief or longing.

I don’t like passing people who sit begging. Sometimes, I like to ask the person “What is your name? Where are you from?” I am amazed, most often, at their gracious answers, with a God bless you wish. A friend sent me this poem last week.

One smile can lift a spirit.

One candle can light a room.

One step can begin a journey.

One heart can love many.

One person can make all the difference.

That One is You.
