30 Sunday  B

We sometimes think that we are self made successes, with enlightened viewpoints. It may be true, but not the full truth. The Jesus Story today focuses on the full truth. We are receivers of life, not makers and we always need enlightenment. We are searchers on the way. We are beggars and blind Jesus says, but loved to bits, in our human condition.

Jesus shows us how to get real. First, be truthful. I need help -  ’Jesus, Son of David have pity on me’. The name David would have touched the heart strings of Jesus. David was a man of heart and failure, wild but a lover of God. Second, Jesus involves the people. They encourage the blind man Bartimeus to meet Jesus. The blind man jumps up. Third, Jesus asks the blind man ’What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus knows that the man is blind and knows what he wants, but with deep respect, he encourages him to tell his story....how we all love to tell our story to a listener. The blind beggar has the words well rehearsed, many days of practice, no long winded speech - five words. ’Master let me see again’.

Isn’t life all about trying to see again and again and again, whether married, single, religious or world leaders, discussing climate change and threats of war and hunger. We never know the full story, of ourselves or others. There is always more to be seen and learned. The young student said that life is about ‘seeing more’ before doing more. The human mind and heart is like a parachute. At its best when it’s opening. Lord that I may see again and again and again.
