2 Sunday Advent C

Sometimes people ask Why are Christians so glum and unenthused, when the message we have, is so encouraging and wonderful....a marvellous love story about God and life. It is true that often we think of God’s Word in the Bible as mostly don’ts, laws, rules, restrictions, forbidding things. The truth is the opposite. God constantly tells us to sing, rejoice, clap hands, dance and play music. In most of the Bible and right through the Bible God is always saying ...Don’t be afraid..You are loved to bits.

Take off your old rags, He says to the girls, and put on beauty. Wear a crown on your head ...all are princesses in Gods eye. To the lads He says ...Be like royal princes, who have won the prize. God is Jubilant for you. Today’s Psalm Song completes the picture ....What marvels God has done for us, indeed we were glad.

We are in many ways like John The Baptist, in today’s story, and that is a consolation too. John spoke a tough language, in God’s name. But in his humility, he says ...I am only a voice ...I am not The Real Person. John was strong on threats and rules, but Jesus was the friend of prostitutes, and tax collectors, and loved parties .John found that kind of love difficult to stomach.  A God of such compassion and mercy, with respect for all, was really New Wine, and so wonderful, that it is still hard to believe. John’s last word today shows how he converted ...All people will see the salvation of God.
