2 Sunday  Lent B

I had misplaced a small casket, a pocket size container. It was a present that I got as a young priest, to bring Holy Communion to the sick and housebound. There was a cross on the cover, and my name. When I found it, the cover was grey and dusty, the cross and my name faded. But the inside of the cover was shining gold, like a mirror...I could see my face, the sky and items around.

What grabbed my imagination was that the same cover piece could be ashen grey on the outside, and glorious gold on the inside. In today’s Jesus story it says that Jesus face and clothes were ordinary, grey, on the outside and then became glorious in golden light. The story is not just about Jesus. It is about us. We have grey dust or ashes, placed on our foreheads to begin Lent, but this same dust becomes the golden light of Easter and Glory. The story tells us ‘Who‘we are and the wonder of who we are. We are made for glory and so is the universe that mothers us.

‘Human Being ‘is our name  ....human is all the things and thoughts and happenings that surround our lives, the dreary drudgery of days and ‘being ‘is the ‘who ‘behind the scene, the spirit, the gold inside our  flesh cover. Some say that life is a dance ...you and I are the dancers..This golden spark,’within ‘never fades in Gods sight, because it is His idea. We are ‘spirit’ people ..

Maybe we don’t think enough about ourselves, and the wonder of our being. Lent time invites us into this wonder. If I wonder at my own being, I will surely wonder at the wonder of fella beings.and all creation..
