27 Sunday  B

Thomas Merton left the silence of his monastery to go on a peacemaking journey to the East. Visiting a large city he was awe struck, seeing thousands of people. Each person’s face was light up and dazzling. I imagine that he saw written on each forehead....I want to be loved.

God’s love story is beautifully told today. The man has everything...the world at his feet, but his heart still aches. So God gives him a companion called woman. He is overjoyed and dances with delight. But somehow the ache in the heart does ‘not go away.

Only God can totally satisfy the human heart. Marriage counsellors remind people that no human being can totally satisfy another human being. Passion and pleasure are blessings, but only last a while. They are hints of a Greater Joy and so it is with all our desires, to be beautiful, to be ageless, to be a star, a great business success, a millionaire. All are ‘sell by date’, because our spirits are restless and are designed for God.

Marriage and Sincere Relationships ask for great generosity, from weak human beings. Maybe God purposely leaves ‘a gap’ in our human make-up, so we can turn to Him for help, and learn to say Thanks, and give Thanks. It seems to me that the blessed Marriage or Sincere Relationship, blossoms into friendship over years. The friend is there to rely on, does not expect perfection, has heart to say ‘sorry’ first, has a good word, is thoughtful and respectful. Jesus called Himself ‘Our Friend’. He is  A Companion on the journey.
