I don’t think the Trade Unions would agree with todays Jesus story. It seems unfair to the working person ...no pay for overtime .I think that Jesus is trying to give us an image of God,who is beyond all we might hope and desire,so generously and graciously different to our mentality, which is..you get what you earn,..whereas God says ,All is gift . It is our need that attracts Gods love and compassion more than anything we do . When a little child trips and falls, our immediate instinct is to respond to the childs need. The child does not earn our response. It is the need that makes the response .St.Therese used say that we don’t achieve Gods Kingdom it is given, that she had no works to merit Gods Love .She asks God to be her lift ,on which she totally depends . We have no right to forgiveness ,but we are right to expect forgiveness . The young monk wanted God to take away his temptations .The old monk advised ...that would be a disaster ,because it is our temptation and weakness that make us turn to God for help in need .I guess that is what St.Paul means when he says that he glories in his weakness ,which is a passport to Heaven .The Communion Prayer catches this Loving Mystery. ‘Lord I am not worthy to enter your roof ,say but the word and my soul shall be healed ‘.
