24 Sunday  B

A young student was tragically stabbed to death recently. The words of his mother were deeply moving. She said that life was made up of contrasts, light and darkness, joy and sorrow. All is part of the picture of life that is God’s mysterious plan for us. Our purpose in life is to grow, in this mixed world. That is reality. We are faced with a choice, to live in the darkness of bitterness, resentment, blame, blame or can we rise to the challenge of following ‘light’ of love and forgive.

That is the message of Jesus Christ in today’s story. He says that He will face the negativity of rejection, humiliation and death, but that, in taking the Cross and losing life, He will be glorified by The All Loving Father.

Peter cannot understand this language, nor indeed can we so often. We pray at Mass ‘Lamb of God You take away the sins of the world’. Many transferred their sins with old sacrifices, but only ‘The Lamb of God ‘..Jesus Christ ’takes away’ the sins of the world. He transforms our humanity through His Spirit and He gives us strength to follow light, rather than darkness.

This broken hearted mother said that maybe our hearts need to be broken to expand. She said to the young people that your best gift of sympathy is to let the light in your life shine rather than darkness. That light shone in my son’s heart. Be peacemakers.
