Jimmy Keaveney was a great Dublin footballer . I remember his mother when she was dying .She used to like the odd cigarette. With good will I suggested to her ....that maybe a cigarette would give her a little comfort .She looked up at me from her sick bed and said ...Our Lord hadn’t much comfort on the Cross had he ..She had traced the meaning of Cross on her heart .God Our Father has not promised us a trouble free life,a straight journey, all comfort ,but He does promise us Eternal life, and He does promise with His Spirit to be with us,and help us to cope, and He also shows us the way to love, and live through life and death .I was at the funeral of a baby recently, at the grandparents plot . There are short poems/songs and long poems/songs in life . Each is complete in Gods Providence ,and will become an orchestra of joy .The babys name will always share in the family reunion .Meantime there are tears of sadness as we try to comfort each other .One can sense a compassionate ‘spirit’ as people stand bye in support, some getting the tea and sandwichs, others sharing stories ,others having a chat in the local. We are helped to regain our breath .The Celtic Cross of the Scriptures ,in Clonmacnois shows Christ on the Cross dressed like a King ,with eyes wide open, hands outstretched as if to embrace us . We all have to pass through the Stations of the Cross into those Loving Hands encouraged with the prayer ....Into your Hands Lord I commend my spirit .
