22 Sunday  B

I often hear people say ‘I need my space’. What is that? It sounds simple, but it is deeply mysterious. A cup is not useful without inside space, nor is a bottle, or a house. A human being is described as someone with a space inside and God is that space. Breathing I think is a kind of reminder.

Etty Hillesum, a young journalist, died in Auschwitz concentration camp. Her religion was ‘a voice’ in her heart. She volunteered to go on the death train to be with her people. Her diaries were found. She tells that her heart is like a well. Sometimes the well is blocked with grit and stones, but deep inside the well is God too.

This, I think, is what Jesus is telling today, speaking about ‘the within’ in our human hearts. The ‘within‘ makes and shapes us. There is God’s being .. Sometimes, like Etty, this space, or being, can be cluttered by selfish thoughts, hurtful ways, but deeper is the being presence of God that we can call and rely on. There is a depth of kindness to be found and expressed in concern for the widow and orphan, the strength to peace make at home and abroad. All are within God, all sinners, all saints and all sorts.
