15 Sunday  B

I remember his funeral. The priest said that this man had no money or property when he died, but he had thousands of friends. I often heard him say that you can only wear one suit at a time and can’t eat more than three meals a day. He worked in the pubs of London. He met a variety of people, saints and strays. They were often the same people, he would say. He backed a horse, drank a pint and told stories of home. It is a privilege to help, a privilege to be asked, he would often say.

Jesus sent out helpers to day to make people feel good. It says that He gave them ‘authority ‘, but it was a different kind of authority. It was about simplicity of life, not lording over people or telling what you ‘should do’. That we don’t need that much ‘baggage’. It only weighs us down and costs extra. That you don’t push anything down peoples throat, a viewpoint, Yes, but no force. Respect is basic. Have an eye for the sick, the deprived, the outcast. People sometimes say that ‘religion, is divisive, trouble making. They forget to say that it is ‘bad’ religion that is divisive. Love and God’s Love can only unite.

I like the prayer ...May Your Love Lord, make us what You have called us to be.
