12 Sunday  C

The little ones in school were talking about birthdays. They asked me my age. Feeling kind-of –youngish, I asked them to guess. A hand shot up with a loud answer .....a hundred ....truth, indeed in the eyes of innocence.

Who do you say I am, Jesus asked His friend today. Peter shot out  an answer ...Christ of God. It was impulsive and childlike too. Peter did not know what he was saying. Faith is mystery indeed, not primarily about knowledge, but more of heart, feeling, experience, and rather like love. I can have read all the love books, but ‘loving’ is extra vision and gift given, not earned. I imagine Jesus coaxing his friends into a deeper understanding of His Mission and our daily life.

See the farmer sowing seeds. The seed has to enter a world of darkness before it can emerge into the light of new life. I will face the darkness, Jesus says, and so will you, but it’s only a passing through phase. Think of the mother and her baby, in the darkness of the womb, before emerging into new glorious life ..joy to the world. In life there is no escape from darkness, but it is surpassed and transformed, with dawn and sunlight. My Kerry friend, Michael, said that ‘it was a hard winter, and there were losses in the farming, but the Sun never fails to shine’. God promises us both Love and Companionship.
