Sea, waves, storm, sinking,
depths, are images that colour God’s Word to day. They remind me,
with sadness, of the Air France Airplane loss of life in the ocean.
‘Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord’ comes to mind. The Jewish
religion thought of the ocean as a monster of death, but not the last
word. It was also the opening to eternal joy and reunion.
Sometimes people joke about
‘walking on water’ not realising that it is a poetic way of saying
that Jesus Christ has conquered death. Jesus tells us that we and life
are part of a bigger story. We are small boats with a larger destiny.
We are chosen by The Father for life and love.
It is awesome to think of
reunion with dear ones. I look forward to meeting my mother, who died
when I was young. I imagine meeting great characters and people who
helped me and gave friendship and affection.
Meantime we try to support and
comfort each other with candles of care and affection and pray ‘Into
Your Hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit’.
