1 Sunday Lent A

I have often wondered why the ‘’Thank You prayer at Mass’’ calls Lent a joyful season. Is it because we humans always desire happiness, and Jesus gives us a recipe- menu for happiness to day. Because we are human, our hearts are stamped in God, and only God can totally satisfy us. Jesus, in his temptations, shows us that there are three false gods, that promise happiness, but don’t deliver. He too, faces the false gods. First, Not on ‘’bread’’ alone ...money ..is one satisfied. Money is blessing, to be used for ones good, and the good of others. Jesus does not seem to be impressed with fasting – giving up-, unless it relates to loving, and helping others. The second false god, is showing off, and boasting ..jump from the top of the Temple and they will all be impressed. Jesus shows that religion is not about magic. It is about love. The third false god is about ‘’possessions’’. Have all the kingdoms of the world. Have power over others and you will be happy. Jesus says ‘’Be gone liar’’. Spiritual people, say that a good idea in Lent, is to give oneself, a moments silence of heart to God..just wait, relax, no words.. maybe slowly take a breath and see what happens.
