Oliver Plunkett - Ireland - 17th
Century
As I walked in pilgrimage from
London Tower to Tyburn, I thought of Oliver Plunkett making his last
journey-to be hanged, drawn and quartered, for conscience and truth.
He was the last of the martyrs of faith to die at Tyburn. A Protestant
court refused to condemn him in Dundalk, Ireland..But there were other
enemies among his own people.
When he was asked by Pope
Clement to leave Rome and go as pastor to a troubled Ireland, he knew
the fate of his predecessors -one died at the Tower of London, another
was murdered at Tulsk, and five others died in exile. His, was an
extraordinary love to face such a storm. He died without bitterness
for king or accusers.
Coping with the unlovable bits
in others means pain and suffering. Jesus accepted it. So did Oliver
Plunkett and made it redemptive.
