Maximilian Kolbe - Poland – 20th
Century
I remember a banner held by two young people, in St. Peter’s
Square in Rome, at the canonisation of Maximilian Kolbe in 1982. Maximilian
was portrayed in red vestments, with Franciscan sandals. He was enveloped
in white clouds and greeted by an angel of resurrection and a gracious
Mother Mary. At his feet lay a miniscule emaciated body, twisted up in
death on a prison floor, with a lethal needle in his arm.
The other memory I have is of the Polish Sergeant, Francis
Gazowniczek, the one whose life was saved when Maximilian volunteered to
take his place in the death chamber. He was present at the canonisation. I
wondered what his thoughts were.
The seed of glory sown in human hearts, will flower when
we see God’s Face .
