Matt Talbot - Ireland - 20th Century.
Addiction of any kind strangles life. Drug abuse is a
modern day addiction. The easy course ,some say, is to keep them on the
move, abusers and abused. The more human approach is to try to reform the
person at source.
Matt Talbot was an addict to drink. The worst, he said, was
when he was refused drink in a pub, because of his condition. He realised
then that he had ‘gone to pot’. He turned to God for help and strength, realising
that he was too weak, alone, to break the chain of misery. He found the
presence of God in the church and in his heart. He beat the drink addiction
and died peacefully.
Parents worry about the ways and means of drugs and how
to cope with their children. Keeping the door of the heart always open to
them, encourages them to open hearts, with a care for others, and better
the world.
