Martin de Porres
- Peru - 17th Century
All the odds were against Martin.
He was illegitimate, and rejected by his father .He took on the most menial tasks to survive.
He was a barber, gardener, carer of the poor, collector of money, lover
of animals and a lay Dominican Brother.
Pope John XX111 said that Martin did all he could to care for the
poor, farmhands, blacks and mulattos who were looked down on as slaves .Martin had God’s vision of a world in harmony,
but for harmony there is need of true justice in the way we relate to
God, to self, and to the world.
It is said that Martin was the first to set up a home for pet
animals, although it was in his sister’s house. For him ,all is interrelated in God’s plan ..the
cosmos, the animal kingdom. all humankind. We are, in a real sense guest of this world.
