Luke – Palestine – 1st Century
Luke not only gives us the Christian story, but also
gives us the meaning of Christ’s life. His three masterpieces are parables about
God’s mercy.
In the parable of the Lost Son there is no reprimand
from the Father, no confession to make. The Compassionate Father welcomes
home, unconditionally, both sons.
Only a Foolish Shepherd would risk leaving 99 sheep for
one stray, but in the parable of the Lost Sheep God’s Love is foolishly
extravagant in our regard.
In the parable of the Lost Coin the finder spent more
money on the party afterwards than the coin was worth.
God’s love focuses on joy and is not penny-pinching. It
is said that Luke was close to Mary. He certainly was a feminist, in the
best sense. He puts special emphasis on the female companions with Jesus. He
is not afraid to shock us with the wonder of the Good News of Jesus Christ,
which is full of humanity and mercy.
