Margaret Clitherow –
England - 16th Century
I first heard of Margaret
Clitherow during student days, in the beautiful city of York. She is
remembered lovingly, in its stones, and in its streets. She was a
beautiful witty wife and mother. She became Catholic after marriage to
her well-to-do Protestant husband. She sheltered fugitive priests, and
for this reason forfeited her life.
Her husband John pleaded for
her. ’Let them take all I have, but save her, for she is the best
wife in all England and the best Catholic’. The ideal marriage
relationship is often described as two hands touching together gently
and firmly, not intertwined in each other, but each with its unique
identity, both pointing in one direction ..the unseen God of Love .
